I'm one of those people who still can't be classified in our modern society. Maybe
it's a good thing. I don't really fit into a box, and I like it this way.
So let's start with what I am not:
I had various job titles, ranging from 'Administrator
Support Officer' to 'IT Assistant', but that mostly means that you do an Administrator/secretary/telephonist's
job, and get paid as such (lowly, I have to add), plus run the company website and intranet without much acknowledgement.
In my freelance capacity, I am 'freelance web consultant', which sounds great, but does give the impression I wear a suit
and carry a consultants' brief...but far from it!
But I am a Web Content Editor, so know my name!
I'm far more an editor than an IT person, although
you have to know your content management system, some HTML, image manipulation, web structuring, accessibility... But I am
also a proof reader, a writer, communications person, networker and yes, consultant of some description – I sit at my
web like a big fat spider, pulling all the threads (pictures, Press Releases, information, people, places, you name it) together.
In fact, I AM THE WEB!
I put my energy in making sure that whoever
comes to the website finds material they need quickly and hopefully in a logically structured manner. I ensure that the content
is accurate, well-written, easy on the web-scanning eye, easily found by search engines and other
spiders (than me!). If you have a question, a complaint, a suggestion, you email me, and get a friendly and quick answer.
And you can email me again, and again. If the website has a discussion forum, I make sure the topics are interesting, that
there is no profanity, cyberbullying, or useless spam. I ban those who post porn links and encourage the ones who have something
useful to say. I am, in fact, your friendly matron in a big boarding school – I scold, but also give you a cookie!
I am the personality behind the website.
Of course, you can have a company doing it all
– get your updates once a week with some Search Engine Optimisation thrown in, or an overworked member of the Administration
can quickly post your Press Releases - but if you want passion, involvement, interesting pages that are readable and look
good, quick updates and replies to suggestions, in fact, if you want more a community than just a website...you need...ME!
